Country singer George Strait and ‘Phantom of the Opera’ star Michael Crawford will also be feted in December at a gala hosted by the president. The first honorees for the revamped Kennedy Center Honors have been unveiled by U.S. President Donald Trump, who is also the new chairman of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. This year’s honorees include Rocky star and filmmaker Sylvester Stallone; disco-era singer Gloria Gaynor; the rock band Kiss; Michael Crawford, the British star of Phantom of the Opera; and country crooner and songwriter George Strait. The 48th annual Kennedy Center Honors, set to air on the CBS network and stream on Paramount+, will be hosted by the U.S. President. Stallone was earlier named by Trump as one of his ambassadors to Hollywood. “He’s a very special guy. A real talent, never been given credit for the talent,” Trump added about the Hollywood actor during an hourlong press conference Wednesday. The president also recalled Crawford making his ...

Rabbits with ‘horns’ in Colorado are being called ‘Frankenstein bunnies.’ Here’s why

Image
A group of rabbits in Colorado with grotesque, hornlike growths may seem straight out of a low-budget horror film, but scientists say there’s no reason to be spooked — the furry creatures merely have a relatively common virus. The cottontails recently spotted in Fort Collins are infected with the mostly harmless Shope papillomavirus, which causes wart-like growths that protrude from their faces like metastasizing horns. Viral photos have inspired a fluffle of unflattering nicknames, including “Frankenstein bunnies,” “demon rabbits” and “zombie rabbits.” But their affliction is nothing new, with the virus inspiring ancient folklore and fueling scientific research nearly 100 years ago. The virus likely influenced the centuries-old jackalope myth in North America, which told of a rabbit with antlers or horns, among other animal variations. The disease in rabbits also contributed to scientists’ knowledge about the connection between viruses and cancer, such as the human papillomavirus ...

Spurs squander two-goal lead as PSG win Super Cup

Image
European champions Paris St-Germain produced a superb late recovery before winning a penalty shootout to clinch the Uefa Super Cup and deny Thomas Frank a first trophy as Tottenham boss. Spurs led 2-0 after 84 minutes and were then seconds away from clinching an impressive victory before PSG substitute Goncalo Ramos headed in a 94th-minute equaliser. That took the tie straight to penalties and PSG missed their opening effort as Vitinha fired wide, but Micky van de Ven, who had scored Tottenham's first goal earlier on, had his spot-kick saved by Lucas Chevalier. Mathys Tel shot wide for Frank's side before Nuno Mendes held his nerve to convert the winning penalty for PSG. It meant Tottenham missed out on winning a second European trophy in three months. Frank was taking charge of Tottenham in a competitive match for the first time since he replaced Ange Postecoglou, who was sacked 16 days after guiding the club to a 1-0 victory over Manchester United in the Europa League ...

How to see the meteor shower from Bangladesh between Aug 12-13

Image
Every August, the night sky has a way of humbling us. The Perseid meteor shower returns, reminding us that above the haze of our everyday lives, there's a theatre of cosmic dust and light. This year, on the nights of 12 and 13 August, Bangladesh will have a clear ticket to this celestial display — if you know where and how to look. Why We See It? -As Earth orbits the Sun, the debris left behind by the Swift-Tuttle comet forms the Perseids meteors. The small microscopic particles burn up in Earth's atmosphere at incredible speed, which in turn creates meteor showers. ## Best Spots in Bangladesh - Light pollution is your biggest enemy here. While you can catch glimpses from any open field in the outskirts of Dhaka, your best chance lies in the quieter, darker corners of the country. # Cox's Bazar: Go to the quiet hilly side of the city and enjoy the show with the ocean on the horizon. # Saint Martin's Island: Far from the mainland glare, with the bonus of ocean air...

Canada Post workers rejected ‘final’ contract offers. What happens next?

Image
Labour experts say another postal service strike is unlikely after unionized CanadaPost workers rejected their employer’s latest round of offers in a forced vote and the parties mull their next steps. The Canadian Union of Postal Workers said Friday that the roughly 55,000 members represented by the union shot down the Canada Post’s latest proposal, which would’ve seen wage hikes of about 13 per cent over four years and restructuring to add part-time workers to the deal. Some 68.5 per cent of urban mail carriers who voted were against the deal, while their rural and suburban colleagues were 69.4 per cent against. Adam King, assistant professor in the labour studies program at the University of Manitoba, said the forced ratification vote ordered by the federal government and administered by the Canada Industrial Relations Board was a “distraction.” “Hopefully, at the end of the day, we see an agreement reached at the table — where it should have been in the beginning,” he said in an...

Chikungunya outbreak in China: What’s happening

Image
China is currently battling one of its most significant chikungunya outbreaks in decades. Most cases, more than 7,000, are centered in Foshan, Guangdong Province, with smaller clusters in nearby cities like Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Dongguan, and Zhongshan. Although reported fatalities are few, health officials emphasize the strain on local healthcare systems. Infected individuals are being quarantined in mosquito‑proof hospital wards for about a week, and authorities have deployed aggressive mosquito control measures, including drones, larvae‑eating fish, and even predatory non‑biting "elephant mosquitoes," to suppress Aedes populations. The CDC’s Level 2 travel advisory calls for enhanced precautions for travelers to Guangdong, emphasizing that while chikungunya is rarely deadly, its symptoms (mainly fever and joint pain) can be disabling, especially for older adults and infants. Which countries are at risk According to the CDC’s current travel health notices, the following ar...
